چکیده

Discussion Although multiresistant P. faldipamm is an increasing problem, reports of P . vivax resistant to chloroquine have been few. The above case reports document the presence of chloroquine-resistant P. vivax in India, and show that it may not be as rare as it i s presumed to be. Also, the number of drug resistant strains is probably increasing. Antimalarial drugs other than chloroquine used for P. vivax have limitations of their own: sulfadoxinepyrimethamine is not as effective as chloroquine, quinine is difficult to administer, and tetracyclines are contraindicated in children and pregnant women and are not tolerated by many patients. Non-availability and cost limits the use of mefloquine and halofantrine. Further population-based epidemiological studies will be needed to define the extent of chlofoquine resistant P. vivax and identify suitable alternative treatments. If this problem were to become widespread, there would be significant implications for the treatment and prophylaxis of malaria in India.

In vitro activity of cycloguanil against African isolates of Plasmodium falciparum.

The in vitro activity of cycloguanil was assessed against 86 African isolates of Plasmodium falciparum by a semi-micro assay system. A bimodal distribution of susceptibility patterns was observed, with 44% of the isolates being cycloguanil susceptible. Cycloguanil alone retains a high activity against the intraerythrocytic forms of some isolates and, together with its activity against the hepat...

In Vitro Activity of Mefloquine and its Enantiomers Against Plasmodium falciparum

The in vitro activity of rac-mefloquine hydrochloride and its pure enantiomers was tested against a chloroquine-resistant (PF.IBS2) strain of Plasmodium falciparum. The parasite isolated from Iranian patients was cultured in vitro by the candle jar method described by Tranger and Jensen and was exposed to the racemic mefloquine or its enantiomers over the concentration range of 10-9 to 10-4 M. ...

Treatment of Malaria Parasitaemia in Infants and their Mothers

Malaria is an infection sustained by three parasites namely: Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium vivax, and Plasmodium ovale. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common and virulent parasite. These parasites are present in different areas of the sub-Saharan African countries and Asia. In 2010, there were an estimated 219 million cases of malaria resulting in 660,000 deaths and, approximately, two-t...

In vitro activity of artemether against African isolates (Senegal) of Plasmodium falciparum in comparison with standard antimalarial drugs.

The in vitro activity of artemether against 56 African isolates of Plasmodium falciparum from Senegal was evaluated using an isotope-based drug susceptibility semi-microtest. The 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) values for artemether were in a narrow range from 0.8 to 15.2 nM (mean IC50 = 3.43 nM) and the 95% confidence interval (CI) was 2.50-4.36 nM. Artemether was equally effective on chlo...

Susceptibility of Plasmodium falciparum to the drugs used to treat severe malaria (quinine) and to prevent malaria (mefloquine, cycloguanil) in Comoros Union and Madagascar.

OBJECTIVES To monitor the sensitivity of Plasmodium falciparum to the drugs used to treat severe malaria and to prevent malaria in Comoros and Madagascar. DESIGN We used the in vitro isotopic method to test the sensitivity of P. falciparum to quinine, mefloquine and cycloguanil. RESULTS We tested fresh isolates of P. falciparum, collected from patients living in urban, suburban and rural ar...
